Looking for SMU graduates practicing medicine in the UK

$

0
Specifically I am looking for people who started around around 2003-2004 and graduated 2006-2008 and are practicing in the UK. I have some questions about GMC approval of primary medical qualifications and I am hoping to get some insight from someone who has been through it before. The graduation dates are significant because of rule changes that occurred around that time.

So I was accepted for this January term! Anyone else? We can create a thread or drop me a pm.

Wheere is the thread about the CURRENT Florida lawsuit against SMU claiming fraud?

Hmmmm....What happened to the thread about the Florida lawsuit against SMU claiming the school committed FRAUD?

First, a so-called "moderator" tried to claim the post was a lie or mistake; the (ahem) "moderator" was then proven WRONG by another poster who went to the federal court website and viewed the case - it is federal court in Orlando and alleges all kinds of lies told by the school to get students); then this "moderator" not only didn't apologize to the poster - but apparently went ahead and had the thread COMPLETELY DELETED.

Some 'moderator' - what could he/she be HIDING?

VERY VERY strange. But the truth will come out, it always does!

I really need some genuine advice from the wise and experienced ... I applied to MUA for it's basic sciences and I was sent an email to interview for PreMed as they feel it would be more appropriate for me... "The Admissions Committee feels that you are only competitive for the PreMed Program"

I was really taken aback and almost started tearing up when I saw their email .... they did not think I'm suitable for the basic sciences program just based on the pre-req courses that unfortunately I have struggled with in my three summers of undergrad...what about everything else I've taken and done to get me where I am.

I am afraid now that if I have reached this stage in the admissions process that I wont even stand a chance for any of the other med schools like saba, smu, st.james etc.

Just to give you some background, I am a 4th year nursing student at one of the top 5 universities in Canada. I have completed all the med school pre-reqs as summer school courses and yes my marks in those are not stellar - they are in the 60-69% range, consistently for all these pre-reqs. I had to repeat Organic Chemistry as well but did better the second time.I admit I'm not perfect and my science gpa could be a lot higher epecially seeing the competition for medical school but trust me... I am a very hardworking individual and did all this even while working and looking after my disabled mom.

Either way, my overall medical school application was decent, my current gpa is a 3.0, with tons of extra curricular activities, work experience, tonnes of clinical experience (as I'm coming from a nursing background), great LOR's and moreover I've taken courses in Microbiology, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Physiology etc. It would be painstaking to repeat all this.

Anyone with some suggestions or words of guidance, plz share... I am open to honest feedback and but plz be nice, constructive feedback will be well received.

The common misconception, is that "most" IMG's assume that NY and FL approvals, are dealing with Licensure. So I thought it was necessary to make a sticky bringing this common misconception to light, where other current/prospective students are able to identify the KEY difference between the California and NY/FL approval Lists. As an example......The Florida Approval List is not even managed by the Medical Board, and is instead managed by the Department of Education

California and Indiana are the only States that have a "specific" approval/disapproval List, where the California Medical Board visits each campus, gathers info, performs their own research, and then based on the data collected, disapprove or approve that Medical School. This is why it is so important and why even some countries look up to this standard. Other State Medical Boards do not have these resources, and therefor choose to adopt the Cali List.

Nearly all of the rest of the states DO NOT have an approval/disapproval list. Instead they require a set standard of requirements. In particular, they require that your Caribbean School be IMED Listed. After that, they look at where you did your rotations, how many times you had to take the Step etc, etc. But the key is that having your Carib School IMED listed, fulfills your requirement in nearly all of the states (As long as you fulfill their other requirements, and are NOT Cali Disapproved).

The New York and Florida Approval List has NOTHING to do with Licensure. Instead these lists deal strictly, and ONLY with Clinical Rotations. If your Carib School is NY or FL Approved, then you have the possibility to do as many weeks of Clinical Rotations that you want in FL or NY. If your school is not NY or FL approved, than the amount of clinicals you can do in NY or FL is limited (as shown below).

With New York Approval = A student from your school can do an unlimited amount of clinical rotations in the state of NY

Without New York Approval = A student from your school can only do a MAXIMUM of 12 weeks of clinical rotations in the state of NY

With or Without New York Approval = You ARE ELIGBLE for a Permanent Licensure, due to your school being IMED listed

With Florida Approval = A student from your school can do an unlimited amount of clinical rotations in the state of FL

Without Florida Approval = A student from your school can NOT DO ANY amount of clinical rotations in the state of FL

With or Without Florida Approval = You ARE ELIGIBLE for Permanent Licensure, due to your school being IMED listed

SMU Is terrible. There are many better options such as UMHS or AUA...or schools not approved/disapproved. Being disapproved puts you at the bottom of the barrel.

ST MATTHEWS BEING DISAPPROVED IS VERY HARD ON AN ALREADY TOUGH SITUATION. THEY ARE DISAPPROVED AND THERE ARE 15+ STATES THAT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO PRACTICE EVER AND 5+ STATES THAT WILL LET YOU AFTER A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF YEARS!

MD not accepted by UK's GMC. Impending lawsuit against SMU. Looking for similar cases

I graduated a couple of years ago from SMU and have been fighting to enter the GMC's Foundation Programme ever since. The problem that the GMC has with my MD from SMU is that more than 50% of my education was done outside of the country (In the US) that issued the degree (Cayman Islands), a violation of the SMU's rule, "It must not have involved a programme of study where more than 50% of that study (compared to the standard duration of the qualification) has been undertaken outside the country that awarded the qualification." I took what I was instructed by SMU to take for my MD, only to have the GMC say what I was instructed to do was incorrect. Further, I have several emails from both the Director of the GMC on down directly stating that SMU had been previously warned what would happen should they graduate MDs in this fashion. I was then informed that I was not the only case in which this had happened.

My attorney asked me to reach out to other SMU graduates and see if anyone else had a similar problem and ask how it was, or if it was, resolved. My email address is
stmatthewslawsuit at gmail or feel free to respond here so that it can be found by others in the same situation at a later date.

Thank you.

The Truth about Accreditation/Licensing and why Not to join SMU

This is hands down one of the worst medical schools in the world, and I am not exaggerating...you are better off going to Congo or Uzbekistan...because with a degree or completion of basic sciences here, your options are very very very limited. In all seriousness you are better off going to a school that is unrecognized but at least listed because then your options are open and case-by-case.....in the carribean the best schools are obviously st georges, aua, auc, ross, saba(kinda)...but if you want to get into a school that is going to get everything, and i mean everything, UMHS is the best and as the potential to be the best in the carribean (Ross's son runs the school and is President and knows exactly what to do), they will have all 50 state accred within 2 years and will have a few states within six months...jump on that boat before it departs like AUA did.

The common misconception, is that "most" IMG's assume that NY and FL approvals, are dealing with Licensure. So I thought it was necessary to make a sticky bringing this common misconception to light, where other current/prospective students are able to identify the KEY difference between the California and NY/FL approval Lists. why don't students transfer out??

I read and heard so many students frighten that they can only practice in 35 states. My question is why not transfer out after you take the steps? If you transfer to a school that is not disapprove, wouldn't that give you 49 states :)

SMU vs MUA vs UMHS

I'm new here, and I'm sure this has been posted a few times, but hopefully someone can help me out. I got into all 3 schools, still waiting to here back from AUA. From what I've gathered so far, I've heard extremely mixed reviews. MUA mirrors Saba and people are saying it should receive CA approval soon. Is this true? I've also heard St. Matthew's lost it's Cali approval? I'm not sure what happened there, if anyone is able to explain it to me. Last, I know UMHS hasn't been accredited by anyone yet, but multiple people have told me that it is up and coming and could eventually enter the big 4. Does anyone have thoughts to this?

Thank you.

What is the whole protocol involving guests as long as our roommates agree with them staying with us in the suites? Say a same-sex friend of mine is doing a long term stay on the island, how long can this friend stay with me in my room? If it were an issue, could they pay for their stay?
