I started reading and later posting on "valueMd" in 2006, when my son started 1st semester at SMU. Now 7 years 2 months later he received his Florida license to practice medicine! So Y E S it can be done!!! Hard work, long hours of studying, maybe a little luck but the mountain of becoming a practicing MD is attainable.
A very happy father, here. signing out Dr. B:p

Chances of getting accepted as a transfer to SMU

What are my chances of getting accepted as a transfer to SMU. I recently got dismissed at the end of my 3rd year from a U.S medical school for failing an in-house OSCE exam and the obgyn shelf exam. I've completed all core clerkships and just need to retake the shelf exam in obgyn. I took step 1 and scored above a 200 on the first try. I am scheduled to take step 2 next month but not sure if I should take it. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

How To Succeed at SMU

$

Three things that will increase your chances of succeeding at SMU:

1) KEEP A LOW PROFILE

-avoid the complainers
-avoid the gunners (those who make you feel bad about how little you study and/or make you look bad in front of Attendings)
-avoid the haters
-avoid valuemd for now....yup I said it (this forum is so negative I hope other MDs will post positive things below)

2) STUDY
-purchase USMLE WORLD Q bank FOR STEP 1 during first semester and use throughout basic sciences (spend the money = better Step score)
-purchase picmonics during first semester and use throughout basic sciences (google it spend the $$ if you are a visual learner)
-purchase firecracker.me during first semester and use for both basic sciences and clinicals (google it)
-purchase USMLE WORLD Q bank FOR STEP 2 and use throughout clinicals (purchase and start doing questions as soon as you pass Step 1)
-study a little bit everyday
-when you study aim to understand why rather than memorize
-don't rely on professor's power points only
-study for the shelf exams and try to do well (500 is the mean score for basic science shelf exams for US medical students / 70 is the mean score for the Comprehensive Basic Science exam for US medical students / 70 is the mean score for Clinical Sciences shelf exams for US medical students)
-take Patient Doctor courses seriously (when you get to clinicals preceptors expect you to be able to examine patients on your own and write notes...they don't have time to teach you)

3) TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
-eat well (if you don't want to cook there is Captain's, Gateway to India, precooked food at IGA)
-sleep enough (what you learn today will be consolidated into your long term memory which is what you want for Step 1/ 2)
-keep in touch with your friends and family
-maintain a hobby
-exercise (you can walk to and from school while listening to Medical Podcasts)
-be nice to yourself...if you do poorly on one exam is not the end of the world...pick yourself up and keep going...the truth is that when you apply for residency program directors care more about your Step scores than your GPA

How to decide which foreing medical school to attend

$

In addition to obtaining random stranger's advice from websites like this it is important to do your own research on the options that are out there.

It is always best for a North American to attend medical school in North America.
If this fails consider DO school. (DO students can attend some ACGME approved residency programs and have special AOA residency programs)
If this fails consider attending medical school in Europe, Australia or the Caribbean.

Ecfmg

The ECFMG is more than annoying and does not help with the licensing process. They are constantly changing policy and their system is full of errors. They do not administer examinations in appropriate order. They say that you can take exams in any sequence but they just do that to screw you over. Basically they only want students who have been through approved ACGME programs. Medical students and residents jump through a thousand different hoops and at the end of the day they just call you crazy because of disorganized information. I was fortunate to make it through and get my degree from St. Matthews. It was a lousy school and experience. A dress code really? Anyway, the way to make it through is with political connections. The majority of U.S. physicians are so incompetent that they are a danger to themselves and others. Graduating from a foreign school puts you on the bottom of the list and your "colleagues" do turn on you which is highly unprofessional and unethical. If you make it through, find ways of improving the system rather than contributing to the ongoing debilitation and the already present fraud in the system. I personally hired a lawyer and wrote to the district attorney to put pressure on the licensing board. They had no right to deny bright students from achieving their goals in the first place.

A positive post! My experience at SMU!

$

I haven't really posted on here since I started at SMU back in 2011 because I stopped reading the forum once I realized that it was all negative. It turns out that my experience at the school was great. I never complained, I just went to class everyday, studied and hung out with my friends at least once a week and I did well. I sailed through basic sciences, passed every single class and Honored most. Finished in 5 semesters and took home just about every single award during the 5th semester award ceremony. Then took step1, got great score and transferred into the 3rd year of a US medical school after taking Step1. Although SMU has it's weaknesses, it's really what you make of it. The question is how bad do you want to be a doctor? If you want it bad enough then you will make your education at SMU work in your favor. Good luck to you all :) And I posted some advice below. Clearly I have too much time on my hands in clinicals lol

Here's my advice!

1. Upon starting your first semester at SMU, listen to your Professors, read the powerpoints or whatever else they tell you to read and do any questions they recommend because 9x out of 10 whatever it is they are telling you to do will be on your test!
*Now you would think this would be common sense, but I know a lot people that would get Kaplan books their first semester or some other
review book for the course and read that instead of the Professor's powerpoints or keypoints. And, guess what? They didn't do too well.

2. Study but have fun too!! I would typically start studying 2-3 days after the semester started. On average I studied about 3 hours a day, I would go over everything that we did that day so that I stayed caught up. Then 2 weeks before blocks I would start reviewing any old material over the weekends. My weekend studying 1 week before block exams would involve 8-12 study hour study days on Saturday and Sunday. And, the weekend of blocks I would study 10 hours a day or more. Of course I took breaks during this period. (Ideally you want to go over material 3-4x before blocks)
*Example: If I were in 3rd semester taking Micro, Behavioral and Neuro. The weekend of blocks I would review all the behavioral ppts on Friday,
then on Saturday I would review all the Neuro ppts and Sunday I would review all the Micro ppts. Then I would wake up at 5am and review any
notes that I took. Note: I would take notes throughout the block for each subject so that I could use these notes to study the morning of the test and
to use as review notes once your tests become comprehensive because it is really overwhelming if you try to go over old ppts for a comprehensive
exam.
*** NEVER let yourself get behind. This is the worse thing you could ever do. And, never go out to party if you are behind.

3. Finances. I was financially stable before coming to SMU so please have your finances in order before even thinking about coming since there are no student loans. Yes, Davenport is available but I could not imagine having to do that on top of medical school. I spent at least $20-25k a semester, that included tuition, living expenses, transportation and spending money even while I was at home on breaks. So, if your stable financially then you can have one less worry and you can really enjoy yourself because you want to be able to hang out with everyone when they go to brunch or out for drinks. And, it's nice to go to Camana Bay and buy something after each block to reward yourself for good performance. Plus, being able to live in a nice comfortable place, have a car and be able to eat out and eat well are all vital to your performance in school.

4. Never complain! Just do your work and avoid complainers. Complaining isn't going to change a thing!! Just study, pass your boards, get a good residency and get licensed then chuck up the dueces!!! Be social but avoid the drama! It's fun to listen to all the foolishness but never get involved. Last but not least, avoid reading posts from valuemd because 90% of it is **! If someone is doing well then they won't have time to post on valuemd but if they are constantly posting and complaining then it's highly likely they are a pissed off student that is failing. So beware of the posts that you read.

Because I love to do background checks on people I looked up where the people from the video ended up, so thought I would share: 1) graduated and went into FM 2) graduated and went into OBGYN 3) transferred to ROSS and went into EM 4) graduated but I'm guessing couldn't get a residency so went into clinical research:confused: 5) didn't make it :( 6) graduated and went into FM. BTW, I thought skirts above the knee aren't allowed?

Just recently accepted and wondering if I should attend or not. This school I heard is banned in some states so don't know if I should attend. Also they barely offer financial aid so another reason why I am very cautious to attend or not. Want to know how other people financed their tuition and why to attend. Thanks in advance

CA Disapproval and Greenbook for Residency

$

Hey guys !

I am from Canada and I am interested in practicing in Canada after doing residency in the US.

From the perspective of residency only (not licensing), how important is CA disapproval ? Am I right in assuming that you are only banned from doing residency in California...and the other 49 states are all open for residency ?

Same question as above for greenbook rotations. I have heard California requires all greenbook rotations, both for residency and licensing. So, if you don't have all greenbook rotations, the other 49 states are still open for residency ?

I have been looking around the forum, but most information I found has to do with licensing, not residency.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help.

Clinical Rotations

$

Does anyone have a list of other clinical rotation sites, "major affiliated hospitals", besides the ones listed on the website? I'm searching the ACGME website to see which ones are accredited and "Greenbook". For example, MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland has many Residency Programs everything from Anesthesiology to Vascular, but the ONLY one that is Greenbook is Internal Medicine. Why is that? Is the ACGME website not up to date? According to the Florida Hospital in Orlando website, all of their Residency Programs are accredited by the ACGME: Colon and Rectal Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Radiology, BUT, the ACGME website does not list Family Medicine or Geriatric Medicine, but lists Pediatrics for some reason. I've heard that SGU clinical rotations are all Greenbook and you don't have to worry about it. Are SMU rotations all Greenbook as well or there is a chance that you'll have to do Bluebook rotations?

3rd year rotation experience from current students.

Good morning and how are you doing? I'm currently enrolled in another caribbean school and absolutely disappointed by my 3rd year rotations. I'm not learning as much as I want and it's absolutely horrible. I'm contemplating about transferring into SMU for their rotations. My question is, how are you the current students liking the core rotation sites which are offered by SMU?

I'm currently at Jackson Park and not enjoying it one bit. I fear for my future education that I'm not learning anything. I did well on Step 1, but worried for my life and for my patient's that I won't be able to perform as well on Step 2.

Funding Education for US students

Is there any way for students from the states to attend this school? I mean, by terms of financing. I have no credit, and am in debt for student loans from undergrad. I have 3.0 sGPA currently, and am 1 semester short from graduating.

Student Testimonial for USMLE Skype Tutoring

$

Yes, i'll be glad to share. I know how i felt before signing up too. Working with USMLE Step 1 Tutor to prepare for my step 1 exam was a great experience. And now I am using them for tutoring for step 2 now! My NBME scores when up about 200 points in less than 3 months! future md usmle Skype tutors were very helpful with organizing my thought process, answering questions and generally feeling confident going into the exam. I made sure i took advantage of as many hours i could get, especially when i saw my scores going up on the nbmes, and they accommodated me as best as they could.

Finally, i didn't feel limited or like I'm missing out on anything based on the mode of tutoring (i.e. Skype etc), because i was skeptical at first since i wasn't used to that; but not the case at all. Go for it, you wont regret it. I wished i heard about his tutoring sooner, i feel i could have saved a few months of prepping for step 1; but better late than never :)

Good luck and let me know if you have any other question.

Now lets get to the details about getting shut down. The amount of corruption at this school is ludicrous. And there are paid people on this website who will intervene within threads, and get defensive and tell lies about the school to make it seem great. The school got a contract with a new shady loan program which it will milk until it shuts down. This has happened numerous times before, but this will be the last due to the fact that it won't be profitable after a year or 2 when students can't obtain any residency. As it was, the entering summer semester had 8 students from what I recall. And the numbers keep going down.

True story about attrition rate
Truth be told, 90%-100% of the students at this school repeat at least one semester. On a low end, I'd say 70% do not end up completing the basic sciences program alone. And that number is very conservative. Out of the remaining 30%, there is a whopping 40% who do not complete the MD due to shelf, step, clinicals, etc. That leaves with 100*.3*.6=18% are remaining from the initial pool at this point. And based on the official NMRP, the match rate for this students is ~33.3%. That means that out of the remaining 18% of students, 2/3 do not match. Now you're left with 100*(.3)*(.6)*(.33)=6% of the initial batch of students who actually end up getting a job as a doctor. This is a fact, not a theory.

I am a student who finished 5 semesters on the island and it took me about 3 years. I transferred to a different school with a better loan program. After spending 20k extra per semester on repeats, I can say that it is not worth the extra money nor time. I am amongst the top 6% of students at the school. Do yourself a huge favor and spend the extra year or 2 or 3 and get into a US med school because this caribbean school is garbage, and it won't last long.

Defrauding students
One can argue it's the students fault all they want, but it's simply not true when students are doing well on board review book questions, but miserably failing exams. I can attest to the fact that they do in fact manipulate students using lockdown browser. Not all students have identical questions. Some students do in fact have parts of question stems removed, which is done to increase the difficulty of exams to maintain a certain average. And the best part of the scam is that once the exam is taken, it’s all done and over. Students have no proof that they were defrauded, or do they? Time will tell, SMU, time will tell. You think there’s no proof out there, but you’ll be surprised. There are exams in which there are 30 students taking an exam, and the highest score is 70-80%. It is highly unethical and immoral for the professors to manipulate students like this, but they do it anyway. And there is a common trend amongst the students who are passing every class the first time around. One of these trends is that they aren't seen studying, and a second trend is that they fail the comp and/or step 1.

Finest corruption at SMU
There are certain profs who have illegal copies of the NBME shelf, which certain students also possess. There is documented evidence about this, which will be presented in the future. This alone will get the school barred from NBME privileges. If you thought the california disapproval is bad, time will tell you that it's about to get much worse.

SMU is not in existence to give students a second chance. If it were so legitimate, then why wouldn't it just operate in the US? Yes, that last part goes for all caribbean schools btw.
I wish I had seen the above post before I started this scam of a school.
Did I get dismissed? Yes I did. The school made me repeat 2nd semester and then 4th semester, and then intentionally failed me on my repeat during 4th semester. That is 120k the school milked from me.

DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO THIS SCAM OF A SCHOOL. I REPEAT DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO THIS SCAM OF A SCHOOL.
The administration is a bunch of corrupt people who are milking the bank dry of it's money from which it is getting loans. They trap students into going here, and provide no facilities or resources to study from besides the useless mandatory 8 hours /day lectures. Granted there is like 1 good prof per semester, but other than that, it is a complete garbage school. The island is great, but the school is the shadiest system in the world. I am 100% sure that if Cayman authorities found out, the school will get shut down. I am also 100% that if USA Dep of Ed finds out, the school will lost its accreditation. I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens.

The only people who pass are :
1. people who have some sort of connection with the school or Alumni.
2. people who bribe the school. YES, you read that right.
3. people who are friends with people connected to the school.
4. people who have been dismissed from another Caribbean school and in addition do 1 or more of the above

The amount of cheating, especially by Canadian students is beyond ridiculous. The Canadians here literally want the USA students to fail, and will conspire together to do anything to attempt to make it happen. If people pass semester 2, but fail/drop Path in semester 4, that means they cheated GUARANTEED. Passing this school without cheating is 100% unrealistic. And you must be pretty wealthy or have connections in order to cheat.

The amount of cheating by the school itself gets even more crazy. They are giving different students altered questions in order to ensure certain students fail. They make the decision by block 2 results whether they will pass or fail you on block 3. There is a reason they don't let anyone see questions for certain classes when you review, and the reason for that is that they don't want you to find out that your questions were different from other students questions. Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT let them do this to you. Four other students along with me are witnesses of this, and will confess with evidence if required by law.

Lastly you are wasting your or your parents' money by going to this school. That's 20k/semester if you live frugal. Why I'm saying that you're wasting is that less than 10% of your beginning class will become a doctor. And that is scary, but the actual truth they will never tell you before you start. They will try to sell you the island being safe and other crap which in reality doesn't really matter since the Residence Hall is a pile of dump with no real internet(at least not by today's standards.). The residence hall is a rundown building, nothing like the clean pics on this forum. Quite frequently, the residence hall internet won't work or you'll get ridiculously low internet speeds that you can't even Skype or call anyone.

SMU Alumni who survived the school and is a chief resident - honest thoughts

I finished at SMU in 2010 (the basic science island portion), started there end of 2008.
Clinicals I finished in 2015 (Short leave of absence for monetary reasons)

Just to give a brief history of my timeline:
- Spent exactly 5 semesters on the island my class size starting was 120 maybe? and I would guess 20-25% of us finished without failing any classes (myself included)
- Teaching I found sporadic, some profs were great (Pathology, Pharm at the time when the former dean taught, Anatomy) and some classes were horrendous specifically biochem at the time
- Teachers and class focus wayyyyy too much on material that was not tested on step 1 in my opinion
- Overall the basic science portion was fine, some classes good some classes bad, I think if you keep your head down and grind you can certainly do well on step 1 and subsequently step 2

Clinicals: (here is where I have my biggest problem with SMU)
- I did the majority of clinicals in Chicago when we still had access to Mt. Sinai (im told its a ross straight track now?) - I know from one of the OB directors there who worked with SMU that the straight track was offered to SMU but our program declined d/t the cost (which I'm told was pretty exorbitant)
- I did some portion of clinicals in florida which I found frankly a huge pain to schedule - I had one dean telling me I was good to go and then after starting a rotation Dr. M.D. (another dean) telling me I had to withdraw cause I didn't talk to him first and I essentially had to beg to not get a rotation I was currently doing cancelled
- Clinicals were a huge pain to schedule in sequence however that seems to be typical of any Caribbean medical school
- Once you match for residency suddenly the school does get interested and start making your scheduling incredibly easy however.

Matching: I matched to my #1 IM program however I really wanted a subspecialty match which I did not get (which I don't fault the school for - I should have been a more prepared applicant)
- I will say as a chief resident my program does interview some IMGs however its entirely dependent on step scores, they are hesitant to interview anybody with a step1/2 average less than 220 or so however the bar is much much lower for US graduate applicants (graduates from US schools to be clear). Also to be clear I don't think my program director knows any differences about any Carib school so being from a supposed "top 3" or whatever makes utterly no difference to him at least.
- Even after the fact when I applied for a cardiology fellowship the school was INCREDIBELY unhelpful with merely loading my MSPE and med school transcript, which considering that several SMU grads have done or are doing residency at my program is insane to me, I would have thought they wanted to harbor a good relationship with alumni

MY OVERALL THOUGHTS:
- There really are better school to consider: SGU/SABA match lists have gotten better and more impressive over the years and honestly aren't hard to get into
- If you are a marginal collegiate student you would be better served doing a 1 year masters bridge to a university program
- Consider after passing step 1 applying to transfer to a US school (Chicago med Rosalind seemed pretty open to it)
- You can do well and get residency at SMU obviously but you will have to grind for it and honestly I don't feel they will really help you in the end.

From the top of the school all the way down to faculty, they are a mess and do not give a rats A$$ about you. They offer no financial aid (unless you illegally use money from an mba program to pay off your medical school tuition, even with that waste of time you will be short), they are not licensed in many states, they will keep changing rules while you remain there, and they have all sorts of legal troubles, lawsuits, etc. So they are on a nice island? If that is your reason to go there, God help you :) Seriously, please look to the better schools, like ROSS, SGU, AUC, AMA, AUA, and I am sure others. This school will put you in debt or weed you out, actually both. If you think you won't fall into this category, trust me you don't want to think like that and you will wish you listened to me if you get yourself into this mess. I sent my brother there despite the warnings, and now he is in a huge bind. Help yourself and heed this advice, i am doing this only to save people the pain and agony of what my brother had to endure. Sarim

This guy is spot on. The school will really make an effort to weed out students. They were CAUGHT removing question stems and giving some completely different questions from certain student's exams. First semester Histo, Second semester Genetics/Biochem, Fourth semester Path. They will collect as much tuition as they can before they boot you out. You will be left with hundreds of thousands in debt, and nowhere to go. Also you can forget about filing a lawsuit, since their office is in a district which is gerrymandered so that they always win. My honest advice is that if you passed first semester, please find a school which will accept you as a transfer. Do not wait for them to weed you out and you are in debt.
